about

I was originally asked to write this song, to be potentially used in a documentary. It was never utilized for its original purpose but I was left with a tune I really love, about a black woman in Montana who homesteaded near Phillipsburg, MT over 100 years ago. Her name was Annie Morgan and her home still exists, you can even go stay there as it is owned by the forest service, the Morgan-Case homestead. Annie was a healer who was able to stake a land claim after she had been sent to Upper Rock Creek to cure a man from his alcoholism. He experienced a remarkable recovery and Annie stayed and homesteaded the land. Later she came across a Civil war vet turned fisherman struck by typhoid, dying along a creek bed. She managed to bring him home and cured him too. As far as I can tell from the story, after he was feeling better he built her a fence around her cabin as thanks, and then never left. Not much is known about their relationship except that they lived on the same spot together until Annie died in 1914. She is buried in the Phillipsburg cemetary.

lyrics

Lift me up
to that place
where are human rainbow race
tends a garden of eden
afloat in outer space

and when I come back down
touch these feet to solid ground
my heart finds a place to rest
tucked away in the forest

Let me heal you
show you a real you
way upriver from the sea
the earth around us
lifts us grounds us
strips us down to our humanity
here variety's the only thing I see

gone is what's right and what was left
far is the world that I left
here on a mountainside my spirit blends with all the rest
did you find me here with mother nature's kiss

Hail you from afar I know what you are
lay my hand on your chest
beats like all the rest
come with me and exist outside the matrix
wherever more to roam
this sweet mountain home
it takes the weight off me

so what is sameness
it is nameless
I see it doesn't exist
mother nature never made it

so listen to the sound of the wind
as is washes your skin
the feelings akin
to the breath of the sky
its the cry its the sigh
from a mother's chest
at ease or unrest

see my light in your night
its the breath between
black and white
here the wilds
are the wisest
only human in the forest
between earth and sky on a mountainside
it takes the weight off me
